Safely Launch your Boat

Towing Safety -

Ensure your vehicle is well-maintained and capable of towing your trailer and boat.
Follow manufacturer and legal guidelines to determine your vehicle’s towing capacities.
Confirm that the towing hardware of your vehicle matches that of your trailer.

Pre-Launch Safety -

Pay attention to the local weather forecast . Determine if it’s a safe day to venture out, and be ready for emergencies .
Prior to backing your boat into the water, make sure it’s properly secured on the trailer and winch (don’t disconnect the winch strap).
Remove transom tie-downs and confirm that the drain plugs are installed.
Place vehicle keys and/or mobile devices in a safe, dry place – not in your pockets (anticipate getting wet while launching).
Check that the mooring lines are attached to the boat and are readily accessible. Mount necessary electronics like a GPS device or a depth finder.
Bring enough properly sized and Coast Guard-approved life jackets for each person going aboard, along with a throwable flotation device.
Pack a first-aid kit and secure loose items such as fishing rods, coolers and water sports gear.

Launch Safety -

Observe proper boat ramp etiquette. Have the boat ready to launch before entering the ramp.
Inspect the ramp before backing down to determine the distance you have to back the trailer into the water and whether there’s any debris to avoid.
Back the trailer slowly down the ramp until the boat starts to float. Don’t back too far into the water or off the ramp. Also, don’t submerge the exhaust of the tow vehicle.
Keep the trailer winch locked and the winch strap connected to the boat until you’re ready to float the boat off the trailer. Unwind the winch slowly and carefully.
Be prepared to handle the vessel once it’s launched, either by rope or someone in the vessel.

How to improve gas mileage with a trailer

A big issue with everyone in the modern day is with gas prices. With the cost of fuel going up and down at different rates, with a lot of depending factors, fuel efficiency and knowing how to optimize is a big way to save your hard earned dime.

On average, you can expect your fuel efficiency to drop 1-2% for every 100lbs being towed, and with many trailers of ours weighing in the thousands, and with your equipment hauled, you can really expect your efficiency to drop substantially. You could see an extra 20 cents being spent per gallon, per fill up on average while towing.

Most of us while towing have accepted this, and understand it comes with the tide. However, there are steps we can take in our towing to maximize on our efficiency while towing.

1) Limit traffic and stops - If you're hauling in a high-traffic area, taking an extra step to haul at limited traffic times in this area, or taking different routes to avoid the slow traffic, as well as gearing up for a one-go trip, rather than stopping can and will maximize your fuel.

2) Change vehicle air filters - Don't let your truck work harder than it has to. Replace air filters regularly to help airflow through the vehicle. The more dirt and gunk filling up the air filter, the harder your truck has to work, the more fuel it will use.

3) Consider a diesel-fuel hauler - While not the greatest, nor the most realistic circumstance for most, as it would be hard to just up and go get a diesel truck, diesel truck's have better fuel efficiency, and can save your dime in the long run.

4) Consider bi-folding ramps - Air resistance is a silent killer for fuel efficiency. For example, open windows can slow a vehicles gas mileage by 20% at 55MPH or above. While not the most dangerous to gas mileage, as the effect is less than significant, a bi-folding ramp can be that extra step towards efficient gas usage.

Trailer Tire: The importance of constant upkeep

Your Trailer tires can blow or wear out under a lot of different circumstances:

- Overloading your trailer - Make sure you know your trailers load capacity, and stick to that number each haul!

- Underinflating the tires - Before every haul job, make sure you check tire pressure!

- Road hazards - Different unseen circumstances such as nails on the road can derail your hauling plans. Make sure to be trained in tire replacement and have a spare for circumstances out of your control!

- Poor tire maintenance - Lack of tire maintenance can run a tire out of commission faster than anything! Be completely sure to keep up on your tires!

- Running your tires beyond the recommended lifespan - On average, trailer tires last 3-5 years. Once you find your tires are going down in quality, be sure to be ready to replace or be ready to take the time to perform regular maintenance to enhance the quality and life span of your trailer tires!

Save money and the headache of tire replacement by simply checking tire pressure and keeping the tires clean! Eventually, the tires will go and replacements will be needed, but hold that off by having great upkeep on your hauler!

SH would like to congratulate a few of our work family members on anniversaries with the company. Congrats to James Abel, Juan Valez, Brayden Harklau, Derek Shaum, and Garry Frame on one year. Humboldt, Iowa Fun Facts - HTC Group Limited

Our plant in Iowa is located in Humboldt! But what you may not know about this little Iowa town is its rich, rich history. In fact, did you know that there is not one, but two famous men named Frank A. Gotch from Humboldt? And they are not even related! Frank Gotch (right) was a professional wrestler in the early 20th century, and is regarded as the first World Heavyweight Champion!

Frank A Gotch M.D. (left) is the pioneer of dialysis for kidney failure!

South of Humboldt there is the Frank A. Gotch National Park. This park is named after World Heavyweight Champion Frank Gotch, but it can be to honor both men!

June 2nd - 8th, 2024 is Trailer Safety Week! This is a week committed to increasing awareness of the importance of trailer safety. This is a week aimed to educate about proper maintenance and usage of their trailers.

Here at SH Distributing, proud member of the NATM, we are committed to this same creed of trailer safety. Here are a few tips to optimize safety:

- Select the proper tow vehicle and trailer for your load
